I fell in love. Yet again. My ears seem to be over sensitive to beauty. (So are my eyes but that’s a different story)
Let me warn you: don’t listen if you’re an easy crier, because you’re bound to cry.

Gabby Young performs with her 8-piece band Other Animals just a little bit over a year now, showing that some people just have it. They don’t need years and years to learn how to play together; they just sit down and do their thing.

To me it sounds like they took a rhythm form Beirut, a lyric form Sufjan Stevens, the voice of Florence(+ The Machine), a chorus from Mumford & Sons and the soul from Alela Diane and melted it all together to something gorgeous. Breathtaking. Stunning. Tear-jerking. Impressive.

Does anyone need another adjective?

It’s been a week now. Every single day. This song. Stuck in my head. Stuck. You’d swear it’s been implanted. Not that I really mind though… </guiltypleasure>

Sugar Me is a1972’s song form the English singer-songwriter Lynsey De Paul

I’m getting the feeling that there’s too much of the same kind of music on this blog… no?
So today I went with something different, but still enjoy.

I like Diplo. A lot. I saw him live at Pukkelpop and fell in love. Not just because of his work with M.I.A., mostly because of this song:

Seems like I have a huge soft spot for samples, but can you blaim me? They give so many tracks just that little bit more.

When I say Dirty Dancing, you either roll your eyes, have a laughing fit or start ranting about “what a horrible 80’s chickflick” it is.  What your reaction should be is: “That movie has one hell of a soundtrack!”.
Really, it’s great. And no, I’m no talking about the theme song, but the great sixties songs they used in most of the dancing scenes.

Stay - Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs ‘64

Do You Love Me? – The Contours ‘62

Big Girls Don’t Cry – The Four Seasons ‘62

Wipeout – Surfaris ‘62

Love Is Strange – Mickey & Sylvia ’57 (Almost all sixties ;))

Love Man – Otis Redding ‘69

Hey! Baby – Bruce Channel ‘62

Cry To Me – Solomon Burke ‘62

Okay so maybe I’ve gone just a bit overboard with the youtube videos, but I was trying to prove a point and – If I may say so myself – I did pretty damn good job!

Now tell me. How many of you are going to re-watch Dirty Dancing tonight? Me too!

ARMS aka Todd Goldstein, better-know as guitarist of the former band Harlem Shakes has a song called Heat & Hot Water which was remixed by Birds & Batteries, four San Francisco based friends who make happy synth pop, which is simply beautiful. – Still following me? Okay, let's listen.

I need the new Sufjan Stevens album. Desperately.

The Age of Adz is set to be released on the 12th of October and will feature the following tracks:

01. Futile Devices - 2:11
02. Too Much - 6:44
03. Age of Adz - 8:00
04. I Walked - 5:01
05. Now That I'm Older - 4:56
06. Get Real Get Right - 5:10
07. Bad Communication - 2:24
08. Vesuvius - 5:26
09. All for Myself - 2:55
10. I Want To Be Well - 6:27
11. Impossible Soul - 25:35

I really like where he’s taking his music. Less folky troubadour, more electronic influences. But that’s just based on these two songs. Who knows, maybe they’ll sound totally different mixed on the album.

Ready for a mystery? Because that’s what Dog & Panther is.
I’ve been listening to the album for about a month now and I knew absolutely nothing about him/them. So yesterday I started googleing like a madman and this is what I found out:

There’s a Dog & Panther site.
There’s a Dog & Panther bandcamp.
There’s a Dog & Panther youtube channel.

Pictures? Names? Nothing. Sure there are people in the youtube videos, but they could be friends or actors. So I started reading blogs, comments and whatnots.

Names that came up: John Katona, Ian Sigmon and Ben Vrazo.
Other information? Ian plays, John produces and Ben writes/sings.
What else? They’re from Michigan.

And that’s about it. Could be all wrong for I care, their music is absolutely fantastic and that’s what matters.

- edit: Is it just me or have they got some Death Cab For Cutie (minus Twilight) going on? Yes/yes?

Today I woke up, saw the nice weather and this song immediately popped up into my mind.
I thought I’d write about it now, because posting a song about the joy that summer is in the middle of autumn seems plain stupid to me, right? Right. Enjoy!

Mr. Blue Sky is a song from 1978 performed by ELO or Electric Light Orchestra.

Hearing the name of this band causes my mind to make an instant connection to a turkey. Granted GOBBLE GOBBLE is a name you’ll remember and the same goes for their music, but couldn’t they choose less of an eyebrow-raising alias?

What their music sounds like is very hard to describe. It’s like someone took a computer, gave it a good shake, added guitars, improvised some lyrics to whatever came out and recorded the result.
Listen and you’ll understand what I mean.

They release more remixes and mix tapes then any other band I know, but if I’d their talent I’d do the exact same.

au-revoir-simone

I probably don’t have to introduce you to Au Revoir Simone, but has anyone heard the Clock Opera remix for Tell Me? It’s featured on the remix album Night Light and quite beautiful.

Sunday 5 September 2010

How about making every weekend post about an old song or band?
The thing is, I have a weak spot for catchy tunes from the sixties. And the seventies. And the eighties. The nineties... not so much. Relieved? Yeah, me too.

First song: This must be the place (Naive melody) by Talking Heads. Hop in the DeLorean and let's go back to 1983. (Man, I really need to stop making lame references...)

The song has been covered to exhaustion (Arcade Fire, Miles Fisher, MGMT) and with good reason.
I don’t know why I like it so much, maybe it's the repeating bass/guitarline or the lyrics. Or maybe just because it's a really different kind of love song - if those even exists.
Anyway, this is a song I think everyone should know and at least appreciate (Read: should know and love).

Friday 3 September 2010

There’s this band from Lafayette Colorado and being the True Blood noob I am, that was the only reason I checked their music.  But hello! Am I glad I did!
Meet Gauntlet Hair: up till now they only have three songs – that I know of – and one 7” released, but word is they’re working on a debut album.

This is the official video for I Was Thinking... by Caitlin McNichols.

Other songs are Our Scenery and All Eyes. There's also this live performance where they play another track and at the end of this interview you'll find an untitled demo.
That makes five songs, I'm a liar!

Gauntlet Hair  - Our Scenery
Gauntlet Hair - I  Was Thinking...

So just to be clear: whenever somebody asks you how I got to know Gauntlet Hair (</dreaming>), you go: “Oh, she just stumbled upon their music on a warm summer’s day. Yes, I do believe it was faith.” and keep the True Blood story between us ;)

So I’m a mash-up fan. I know. A lot of people hate the idea of two totally different songs being mixed together, but I have this one offbeat brain cell that likes rap music mixed over gentle violins and such.

But even if you’re a hater, listen to this:
Pretty amazing, right?

Emancipator is -again- a young electronic producer.
Safe in the steep cliffs is his newest album and you can listen to it here.
